Hats 101: How to Find a Hat That Actually Fits

Most hat questions come down to three things: how big your head is, how deep you like the crown, and what the hat is made of. Here's how all three work at JON BLANCO.

Start with your size

Every regular JON BLANCO hat is built around a hat size of 7 1/8, which is about a 22 3/8 inch head circumference. Every one has an adjustable back (snapback, strapback or leather strap), so it can go up or down from there. That covers most adults.

If 7 1/8 runs big on you, we make two smaller options:

Fit Hat size Head circumference (approx.)
Standard (all regular hats) 7 1/8, adjustable up or down 22 3/8 in
Small fit about 6 3/4 21 1/4 in
Kids about 6 3/8 20 in

To measure, wrap a soft tape measure around your head about a finger's width above your eyebrows and ears, where a hat would sit. No tape measure? Use a string, then lay it against a ruler.

Low profile or mid profile?

This is the difference most people feel right away.

  • Low profile hats have a shallower crown. They sit closer to the head and feel relaxed, the classic dad hat look. Good if you like a hat that doesn't sit tall, or if mid crowns tend to look big on you.
  • Mid profile hats have a deeper crown overall, so they sit higher on the head and hold a bit more shape up front. Good if low profile hats feel like they're perched on top of your head, or if you want a sharper look.

Every product page tells you which profile the hat is, right under the color options.

What it's made of

  • Organic cotton: soft, breathable and broken in from day one. Most of our dad caps.
  • Recycled polyester: lighter and quicker to dry, good for active days and summer. Our snapbacks and active styles.
  • Wool and recycled flannel: warmer and more structured, for fall and winter.

Some styles are made in the USA, cut and sewn in Missouri and Ohio, and others are made overseas in independently audited facilities. Every product page lists the country of origin. See the USA Made Hats collection.

Keep it looking good

Cotton hats last a long time if you wash them every month or so. We wrote a full guide: How should I wash my hat? The short version: top rack of the dishwasher, mild soap, no heat-dry, in a hat washing cage if you have one.
